The overall premiums in the Italian and foreign, direct and indirect, portfolio net of reinsurance
amounted to €136.0 billion.
The aggregated figure is the result of the life sector premiums amounting to: €92.6 billion, and
the non-life sector premiums amounting to: €43.4 billion.
Incurred claims, overall market, defined as amounts paid and the changes in provisions against
payable amounts net of recoveries, amounted to €113.2 billion.
The combined ratio for the 2023 accident year worsened considerably (104.4%) against 91.1% in
2022), due to an increase in claims costs.
Sector employment: at the end of 2023 the italian insurance industry’s managerial and
nonmanagerial staff numbered around 50,000.
